APPLICATION TIP: Résumé Writing Tips.

There are things to consider when writing a résumé regardless of whether
you are applying to government jobs or the private sector. Here are a
couple major, widely-accepted rules:

Use reverse chronological order in your experience and education sections
and throughout your résumé. That means sorting by your most recent
experience or education at the top of the section and working backwards in
time.

Do not use acronyms without spelling them out first. In the federal
government, acronyms are everywhere. However, do not assume that a commonly
used acronym you used in one experience will be used in another.

Ensure you include all of the required information listed in the vacancy
announcement.

Use detail that describes why you did a particular job or task better than
colleagues who share the same job or task.

Tailor your résumé to the job for which you are applying. Using a general
résumé to apply to several different jobs will typically not have the
degree of specificity needed to demonstrate why you are the best candidate.

Remember to include non-paid experience (e.g. volunteer experience,
participation in boards or steering committees, etc.) that demonstrate
required competencies
