Hello All,

(1) Web Resources
I have been told that QSB grad students sometimes do not know where to go to seek answers with regard to QSB and grad school requirements. Here are some resources to that extent

https://qsb.ucmerced.edu/current-students
This is the site especially for QSB students. There is a lot of information there, some probably outdated… In fact, we probably need to cull some of the information in there to make it easier to navigate. I may be asking for some volunteers to help me with this task.

https://graduatedivision.ucmerced.edu/
This site is useful for graduate students, in general, on the UCM campus. There is also a link to the Graduate Resource Center, which provides resources with regard to writing and statistical tutoring, among other things.

https://naturalsciencesgrads.ucmerced.edu/
This site is specifically for graduate students in the School of Natural Sciences. There are useful links there, including information on how to assess your progress (Progress to Degree<https://naturalsciencesgrads.ucmerced.edu/progress-to-degree>).

Also, you have all been given this flowchart. It is really useful for reminding you of the milestones expected of QSB grad students. Note, we are trying to get QSB grad students to take their Quals in the fourth semester. I know that that is stressful, but we are pushing for you to reach that milestone sooner than later.

(2) QSB Travel Fellowships. Many of you have used this program but many of you are apparently unaware of its existence.
You are entitled to $800 every two years for travel/accommodations to a scientific meeting providing your abstract has been accepted for poster or platform presentation and that you are a student in good standing. A pdf describing this program is attached to this email. Questions on this can be addressed to Rita Guel.

(3) Teaching Fellow. There is an option for senior graduate students who have taught extensively: Teaching Fellow. This change in title/position is possible and will enable the recipient to be the instructor of record for an undergraduate course. The title could be a nice addition to your CV and there is an increase in compensation over that of a TA. But please note, there is no guarantee that this title/position will be conferred since there are specific criteria that must be met (including the availability of a course that you could ostensibly teach and approval of certain faculty). However, if this is something you think you might be interested in, please contact me (or Paul Roberts).
