1- as per Roseanna’s email, you are invited to pay attention to the recent data breach that involved the entire UC. While UC Merced has sent a single message about it, other campuses are taking are more proactive approach and sending frequent followup updates (e.g., see message from UCB below).
2- there is some confusion related to the townhall meeting that took place last Friday. That event was specifically for staff. As of today, it is assumed that all Fall classes will be in person, unless one obtains permission from the senate and the dept chair.

Subject: UC Accellion breach & notices of SSN exposure on the dark web
To: Research Managers <researchmanagers at lists.berkeley.edu<mailto:researchmanagers at lists.berkeley.edu>>, Research Directors <researchdirectors at lists.berkeley.edu<mailto:researchdirectors at lists.berkeley.edu>>

Dear Research Directors and Managers -
You may be hearing from your units (if they signed up for the Experian Credit Monitoring) that they are getting notifications that their SSN was exposed on the dark web. A lot of employees seem to have gotten them over the last two days.

The campus Information Security Office has put together a set of steps you can take to secure your SSN<https://security.berkeley.edu/education-awareness/identity-theft-resources#SSN>. The focus of this is to monitor your accounts closely and put a freeze or alert on your credit. IF someone uses your SSN, then you can report it to the authorities and we have information on that too on our site.

Please help get this information out to your staff, faculty/researchers, postdocs and students, and continue to encourage them to consider signing up for the Experian credit monitoring. The quote from a campus security official was that this was the worst breach they have heard of in their 20 years - unsettling news to say the least!

Other resources include last week's campus town hall<https://technology.berkeley.edu/town-hall>, a slide deck<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1slwFq850v129aVLwBdc6wy_YQ0NNxd1cQ__p2U45do4/edit#slide=id.gd0c704eb0f_0_30> shared on this morning's EVCP Mega call by campus CIO Jenn Stringer, and the UCOP website<https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/data-security/index.html> / FAQs<https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/data-security/updates-faq/index.html>.

Thank you in advance,
Elizabeth
