Joint Genome Institute Conference Waiver Application
Rhondene Wint, 100287159

1.Brief declaration of interest in the conference including reasons for wanting to attend.

One of my major goals as a QSB student is to procure all the necessary training and exposure in the field of computational genetics (bioinformatics). As a 1st year student, attending the JGI conference offers an invaluable exposure about the trends and research opportunities/challenges in the field. High throughput sequencing, which will be integral component of my research, is major topic of the conference. Also, the conference will coincide with my own personal deadline to start drafting my research proposal, I believe attending the conference will offer some valuable insights and ideas. Finally, I’ve never attended a science conference of this magnitude before.

2.Statement of commitment to attend if registration waiver is awarded including a brief plan for the payment of travel expenses.

I actually decided to attend even while writing my application for UC Merced. I’ll save from my pay as a TA and book an affordable room, or better yet share a hotel room with any of my graduate peers who will be attending as well.
3. If you plan to apply for a JGI internship or are alumni of the internship program.
Yes, I plan to apply to JGI internship programme.

4. Whether your PI has a community sequencing award.
As a rotation student , I do not have a permanent PI. I’m currently in Dr. Mike Cleary’s lab and he does not have a community sequencing award.

Thank You

Rhondene

Subject: [QSB-grads] Fwd: Free spots at JGI meeting for UCM students

Dear QSB students,
JGI has awarded four registration waivers to QSB students for attendance at their JGI Genomics of Energy and the Environment<http://usermeeting.jgi.doe.gov/> meeting next March in San Francisco,

Attendees would still have to pay for travel/accommodation themselves, but the registration waiver is a $350 saving.

All are welcome to apply for these four slots. If more than four applicants express interest, priority will be given to those who intend to apply for JGI internships, alumni from the internship program, and those whose faculty advisors are current recipient of Community Sequencing Project Awards.

Please reply by Nov 15 to this email thread to apply.
Applications should include:

1.Brief declaration of interest in the conference including reasons for wanting to attend.
2.Statement of commitment to attend if registration waiver is awarded including a brief plan for the payment of travel expenses.
3. If you plan to apply for a JGI internship or are alumni of the internship program.
4. Whether your PI has a community sequencing award.

Cheers,
Miriam
