Hi, All:
Recently (April 2019), Josh Reinhold and I were able to present at the national conference of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) in Los Angeles, California. Our presentation centered around our campus’s journey to develop a shared definition of Student Success and how the Office of the Registrar, who many might think are the least likely to be the champions for such a cause, can be a driving force. Attendees learned the importance of developing a definition of student success for their own campuses and the process our campus used to create a definition.
But you all probably already know these things—we have a shared Student Success Definition<https://studentsuccess.ucmerced.edu/> for campus and many of you were around when we created this definition—and being a part of this listserv means that you are all champions student success in your own way. So why did I feel this email would be a good post for this listserv? I wanted to share with you how the Office of the Registrar used the definition of student success to rethink our Drop for Non-Payment practices.
Fall 2018 brought a significant spike in the number of students who were dropped for non-payment. This spike got the attention of ASUCM and the Chancellor and we were soon asked by leadership to revisit our procedures to ensure our process was the most effective, student-focused model. When we first began to rethink Drop for Non-Payment (DNP) we focused solely on the process, but we quickly realized that our DNP process needed to be driven by an overarching philosophy to provide a clear, shared understanding of why we were dropping students for non-payment. This is where the struggle really began: how does dropping students from their classes lead to their success? Cue our campus’s Student Success Definition! A committee of staff (some of whom are members of this listserv!) used the student success definition to create a philosophy with underlying principles and procedures for our new DNP process<http://registrar.ucmerced.edu/policies/drop-non-payment>!
The take away message for all of us: we can each use the student success definition in our jobs to be the impetus to do things better. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you to incorporate the student success definition into your daily work—be the change!
