Colleagues,

As we gear up to start our fall semester, departments are busy preparing to welcome our students back to campus. With that comes planning for students to resume or start new on-campus jobs.

Student Employment Services would like to take a moment to remind our campus hiring managers of a few changes that have occurred since our operations went remote in March 2020.

Recruitment: Effective December 15, 2020 on-campus job posting transitioned to a new platform, Handshake. Movement to this new tool is being done in two phases. Phase 1 was the successful deployment of the new platform, which includes a new place for students to review and apply for on-campus jobs and a new way for hiring managers to receive applicant information. For more information, please go here<https://studentjobs.ucmerced.edu/handshake>. Phase 2, which will include expanded within the Handshake platform, is currently in development and a deployment date is pending.

Hiring: Many of the on-campus student employment recruitment and hiring processes have changed in the past 12-15 months. Please go here<https://studentjobs.ucmerced.edu/supervisorhiring-manager/how-hire> to learn more about the processes for hiring student employees.

Intake/Onboarding: Due to Covid 19, onboarding has been facilitated completely remote and will continue to be done remotely until we resume full operations in late August 2021. Limited in person intake will begin August 9, 2021. Such in person engagements will be by appointment only and prioritized based on support need.

IMPORTANT: Due to a combination of the remote nature of our current operations, staffing and a significant volume of incoming requests, the intake process is currently averaging/exceeding 7-10 business days to complete. We ask that you please provide the actual and accurate effective date of hire the student is needed to attend mandatory trainings and/or begin performing services so that we may best prioritize the intake process and avoid adverse impacts to units.

Students may NOT begin performing services (or engaging in mandatory training) until they have successfully completed all necessary hiring documents and the hiring manager has received the “clear to work” notification from Student Employment Services.

Please be aware that some of our processes and timelines may change due to the fluid nature of Covid 19 mandates.

We look forward to welcoming our students back to campus and thank you in advance for your patience, support, and partnership.
