Center for Africana Studies Call for Summer Research Travel Grants



The Center for Africana Studies (CAS) at UC Merced invites applications for Research Travel Grants for Students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSHA), researching topics related to the experiences of Africans and African-descended people worldwide, past and present. Preference will be given to graduate students in SSHA. CAS is a research and cultural hub committed to advancing innovative and interdisciplinary research on Africa and the Diaspora.



CAS is pleased to offer awards of up to $3000 for UCM  students to conduct research in Summer 2024. These awards should be used for travel, including airfare, ground transportation, meals, and lodging at your research site. This fieldwork should contribute to a substantial project, including a doctoral dissertation or master's thesis. Undergraduate student recipients are welcome to use the funding toward a summer research project supervised by a faculty mentor. Grant funds must be used by August 20, 2024.



Upon completing the grant, recipients are responsible for the following:

  1.  Submitting a one-page report on how the grant advanced their research agenda by September 9, 2024.
  2.  Participating in a brown bag research conference hosted by the Center to be scheduled in the Fall 2024 semester.

A completed application consists of filling out the Application Form<https://forms.gle/p3kfGAUQLxvu2fcDA> along with a single PDF file with the following items:

1.    Research statement (2-page limit)

2.    A one-page budget outlining how the funds will be spent

3.    A one-page C.V.

Two (2) letters of recommendation, including one letter from the student's advisor, must be emailed to cas-ucmerced at ucmerced.edu<mailto:cas-ucmerced at ucmerced.edu>
