Subject: NEW Graduate Student Resource! Graduate Writing Consultant - The University Writing Center

Hello Graduate Students! The University Writing Center is open and ready to assist you with your writing-related needs. The Graduate Writing Consultant can help you develop your writing projects, no matter your discipline.

What Can I Bring to the Writing Center as a Graduate Student?

Any of your writing-related projects! Having trouble with a paper for your course? Getting started on a personal statement or research statement for a fellowship application? Struggling on a diss chapter? Starting a grant or scholarship application? Want to discuss your CV or Letter of Interest? Responding to a Call For Papers? Want to talk about general writing strategies for long-term projects? The Writing Center can help you will all of these projects and more!

What Will an Appointment Be Like?

For a face-to-face appointment, you will arrive to the Writing Center and the Graduate Student Consultant will greet you. You will take a few minutes to introduce yourselves and you will have some time to expand on your writing project and the concerns you prioritized on the writing center appointment form. Your grad consultant will go over your writing with you and engage in dialogue about your writing process. This can include reading and responding to specific sections of your writing, engaging in a revision activity, brainstorming ideas, outlining, and/or collaboratively editing. The goal of the session is to work together to further your writing process and to allow you to leave with new tools, ideas and/or feedback to make your writing as clear as possible and to meet your writing goals. At the end of the session, the grad tutor and the grad student will fill out a brief survey that details the appointment and the students’ writing goals moving forward.

For a virtual appointment, you will be prompted to upload the writing project you would like to discuss into the system. During your appointment, you will use a live chat feature to discuss your writing, (with an option to use the video function or Zoom at your preference). At the close of the virtual session, the grad consultant will have provided a summative comment at the beginning of the draft and margin notes based on the focus areas of the appointment.

When Can I Schedule an Appointment?

For VIRTUAL appointments, the graduate consultant is available on Tuesdays and Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm. For FACE-TO-FACE appointments, Thursdays 12pm-3pm and 4pm-6pm and Fridays 12pm-3pm. You can make an appointment by going to https://writingcenter.ucmerced.edu/gradstudents , logging in, and selecting “Fall 2021 Graduate” from the drop-down menu at the center of the page. To schedule an appointment, you will be asked your contact information, course information (if applicable), and the specific topics you would like to focus on in that session.

If you just have a quick question, like citation help or a very short piece of writing, you are also welcome to come to the drop-in hours from Fridays 10am-11:30am.

What Else is Happening at the Writing Center?

We’ve got lots of ideas and would love your feedback. In the planning stages are Friday morning workshops on topics like “developing your fellowship application” and “getting started with academic publishing.” We would also like to gauge interest for a regular writing group (weekly or biweekly meetings). If you have ideas or interest, please email the Writing Center at:

What Else Should I Know?

In the Writing Center, the grad consultant’s goal is not to replace your ideas, but to honor yours and help you express them with intention. This is not an editing service; instead, we want to engage you in discussion about ways you can recognize certain writing patterns and revise to be as clear as possible. It is important for our collaboration to respect each other's cultural perspectives and linguistic varieties. Most importantly, the hope is that you leave a session feeling supported, inspired and/or motivated to tackle your writing projects.
