The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the basic workflow, terms and output a student or new researcher would encounter when undertaking a text mining project. The workshop will be an introduction to computational text analysis, including what it is, what's possible, and how it is being used for research. In addition to a discussion on the theories and methodologies in the field, participants will explore different ways to examine and visualize provided datasets using Voyant. Voyant is an open-source tool ideal for experimentation and to familiarize yourself with the process of importing textual data, analyzing it, then creating and interpreting the results as visualizations.

This workshop will be led by Wendy Perla Kurtz, PhD, a Lecturer and Project Scientist in the Digital Humanities program at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she teaches courses and supports Digital Humanities projects through the Digital Research Consortium.
