No worries about the group reply! That's a good question, Brandon, so I'll
answer it for everyone.
If you're a very early career researcher, like a finishing grad. student,
it's true that you are less likely to be competitive for a research faculty
position. However, it never hurts to practice by applying. One thing that
can always be done is to contact the chair of the job search and ask their
opinion on minimum requirements. I am guessing that they would expect a
publication record usually seen in recent graduates of PhD programs or
postdocs. That is to say, at least a few publications in well-respected
journals, and preferably with you leading one or more papers. Again, you
learn a lot by practicing job applications too. One friend of mine in grad.
school was hired as research faculty as a finishing grad. student, but it
varies by program. He was hired by an economics dept., which doesn't
postdoc as long traditionally, or sometimes not at all.
But yes, besides actually applying, the best thing you can do is to keep
building your publication record.
