Dear NRS community,

As you can see from our announcement below, after a year-long hiatus, the NRS systemwide office is reinstating the Mildred E. Mathias Graduate Research Grant program. Grants are available to any graduate student enrolled at any University of California campus who is conducting research at one or more of the NRS reserves. Students from any academic discipline are eligible.

In addition to the $38,000 available to support research in any discipline, this year the California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Group is providing $15,000 in additional funding for research on the environmental exposure and health outcomes of tobacco use. A maximum of $3,000 may be awarded per applicant.

We will now be administering the grant application and review process using Submittable, a web-based software program also used to manage the NRS California Ecology and Conservation applications. Therefore, you may want to be aware of a few key changes to the application process:

  * Applicants will be responsible for gathering all of their application materials and submitting them through Submittable. No applications will be accepted via email or surface mail.
  * Applicants will begin the application process by providing their project description and curriculum vitae to the appropriate reserve manager(s). If the proposed research is approved, managers will email their approval directly to the graduate student applicant.
  * Each applicant will then upload his/her/their project description, curriculum vitae, reserve manager approval, and any applicable research permits, including IACUC approvals, to Submittable as part of the application. All of these materials will be due by the application deadline.
  * Applicants should be encouraged to contact the relevant reserve manager(s) well ahead of the deadline to begin the conversation about the student’s proposed research to allow managers sufficient time to determine if approval is appropriate.
  * When completing their applications, applicants will enter the email address of their faculty advisor. Submittable will then email the faculty advisor with instructions for uploading a letter. Applicants will be able to see if their advisor has uploaded the letter, but will not be able to read the letter. Letters of recommendation will be due two weeks after the students’ grant proposal application deadline.

The full application instructions packet are available on our website at http://www.ucnrs.org/grants/mathias-grant.html.

The timeline for the 2017-2018 application cycle is as follows.

  *   September 11, 2017: Application deadline
  * September 25, 2017: Deadline for reference letter from faculty advisor
  * October 27, 2017: Campus committees review deadline
  * December 8, 2017: Systemwide committee review deadline
  *   December 20, 2017: Award letters sent

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, Donna

Subject: Expanded UC NRS Mathias Grant opportunities 2017 18

Dear UC NRS community member,

We are pleased to announce a call for proposals for the 2017–18 University of California Natural Reserve System Mildred E. Mathias Graduate Student Research Grants<http://www.ucnrs.org/grants/mathias-grant.html>.

The UC Natural Reserve System provides Mathias Grants to support graduate student research at its 39 reserves. Doctoral and master’s students from any UC campus pursuing a graduate degree in any field are eligible. Studies must be conducted on reserves in the UC Natural Reserve System. Since 1988, more than 400 graduate students have received nearly $800,000 from the Mathias Grant program. This year we anticipate awarding $38,000 from a general pool of funds, with individual awards not exceeding $3,000.

In addition, this year the California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program<http://www.trdrp.org/> (TRDRP) is providing an additional $15,000 in supplemental funding to support graduate student research at reserves. These monies are provided to broaden graduate student engagement in studying environmental exposure and health outcomes of tobacco use, and contribute to influencing state and local policy on tobacco. Research on reserve sites might include, for example, studies on the environmental impact of tobacco waste; bioaccumulation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines in aquatic bodies or on land; contribution of the tobacco-specific particulate matter to the air quality and related health outcomes. Other innovative topics (e.g., ethnobotanical shifts in native vs. commercial tobacco use) that address similar tobacco-related human and environmental health issues are highly encouraged. These individual awards will also not exceed $3,000.

Applications for this year’s Mathias Grant program are due by September 11, 2017. Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the application process as early as possible because all materials (with the exception of letters of recommendation) must be gathered and submitted as part of the grant application. Applicants will be notified of their award status by the end of 2017, with funds made available in early 2018.

Essential information on the application process, eligibility requirements, and evaluation criteria is available at http://www.ucnrs.org/grants/mathias-grant.html.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, Donna
