Surveying the Bioenergetic Landscape for New Therapeutic Targets



Abstract:

Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with many pathologies including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, and mitochondrial diseases. However, in many cases, the distinct mechanisms by which mitochondrial dysfunction promotes these diseases remain unknown, and up to 20% of the mitochondrial proteome remains functionally uncharacterized. We screened ~1,000 mitochondrial proteins for their contributions to maintaining cellular energy homeostasis, and identified a mitochondrial adenylate kinase which significantly regulates ATP levels, AMPK/mTOR signaling, and cellular redox homeostasis.



Bio:

Nate Lanning studied signal transduction in cancer biology as an undergraduate. He then completed a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Michigan studying adaptor proteins and focal adhesion biology. Following this, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Mitochondrial Systems Biology at the Van Andel Research Institute. In 2014, Nate established his independent research group as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles. The goal of the Lanning lab is to map mitochondrial proteins and functions to normal and disease processes.
