Dr. Julio Friedmann: Carbon Management of Heavy Industry: Infrastructure
and Innovation.
Deep decarbonization to reach key climate goals will be most difficult in
certain key sectors. These harder-to-abate sectors include heavy industry,
most notably steel, cement, and chemicals, and constitute ~23% of global
GHG emissions (~37% if their electricity use is included). About 10% of
global emissions come from high-temperature heat production, and ~10% come
from by-product chemistry of manufacturing. The cheapest pathways to deep
decarbonization in these sectors typically feature carbon management,
chiefly carbon capture and storage (CCS), or low-carbon hydrogen (which
would commonly include CCS). Deployment requires both infrastructure and
innovation investments to avoid high costs, stranded assets, trade and job
loss, and geopolitical challenges. These sectors are just beginning to make
these innovation and infrastructure investments, but much more is required.
