Interesting paper, thank you for sharing it. You may have heard already that there is a US$5B hydrogen manufacturing project being developed in Saudi Arabia, with NH₃ being produced for export. It’s a joint venture of Acwa Power (the largest Saudi IPP and also a leading solar EPC in the Mideast) and Air Products. (1st attachment)

I also recently found (through reading Wikipedia articles 😊) that there is a commercially operating H₂ salt dome cavern storage facility and H₂ pipeline serving the refinery network in Texas to supplement and back up the H₂ being produced onsite at those refineries. (2nd attachment)

Subject: [LDES-technology] Hydrogen trade ?

I found the concept and results of this new paper interesting because it suggest solar in the Atacama desert could deliver hydrogen by 2025 at 1.7-1.9 USD/kg and export it to Japan, at a lower cost than local hydrogen from wind in Japan – which highlights another aspect of hydrogen that hasn’t been discussed often – that hydrogen could take advantage of different trading networks.

However at the same time the transport cost would be a large unknown and potential barrier to seeing this through – as the cost of hydrogen could double.

Anyway, one aspect to consider for our group is that hydrogen could serve as long duration storage and could be produced in CA or outside CA. I just hadn’t seen other papers do this kind of analysis for hydrogen.

Best

Noah
