April 18th, 2012 MD/Ph.D presentation and discussion by Jennifer Pollock Ph.D.

 <https://webapps.georgiahealth.edu/PROD/pep.show_photo?p_netid=JPOLLOCK> Dr. Pollock will give a brief presentation on the MD/Ph.D program at Georgia Health Sciences University followed by a Q&A session on the program and graduate school in general. This session is open to all but is primarily aimed at undergraduate students.

When? April 18th 2012 at 10:30 am - 12:00 noon
Where? Kolligian Library Room 217.

Dr. Pollock will also give an academic presentation on her research later the same day at 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in Classroom and Office Building Room 279

April 26th, 2012 San Joaquin Valley Health Matters public lecture by Michael J. Ryan Ph.D.

April 30th, 2012 COEHD Undergraduate and Graduate Research Training Programs Final Presentations.

Please join us for our second annual student research colloquium. Undergraduate and Graduate student participants in COEHD programs this past year will present their research. Lunch will be provided for attendees.

2nd annual CGIA GSS event
Friday April 27th, 2012 at the UC Merced California Room

The purpose of this event is to bring together specialized Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals and community members helping address urgent community needs.  This conference will share the latest technology and build networks to understand and improve efforts that help our communities.

Speakers will include state and regional experts in geographic information and leaders using GIS to understand and address urgent local concerns. Lunch will be available from local restaurants featuring healthy selections from “A Taste of Merced”.

UC Merced researcher contributes to study on kids and smoking
Surgeon General's Report says the problem hasn't gone away.

An estimated 3,800 youngsters under the age of 18 try smoking for the first time every single day, said UC Merced professor Anna Song.

About 1,000 of them become everyday smokers, she said.

That's a result of cigarette advertising that influences young people. The industry isn't allowed to target minors with advertising, but they're still seeing tobacco use in stores, media and online, Song said.

"They can't get away from it," she said. "The industry has a big influence of where kids are getting their ideas of smoking."

Song was one of several researchers who contributed to the Surgeon General's Report, which was released Thursday. The report is a combination of work that has been done on tobacco use since the last time the report was published was in 1994.
