Rising from the Ashes: Succession and Metabolism of Post-Fire Fungi

In 2013 the catastrophic Rim Fire serendipitously burned through two long-term sampling sites just outside of Yosemite National Park. Post-fire sampling efforts resulted in a culture collection of pyrophilous fungi, which I am using to directly investigate the metabolism of post-fire fungi that were isolated from distinct successional phases within 1 year after the Rim Fire. In parallel, we are using prescribed burns to investigate in more detail the dynamics and drivers of post-fire microbial succession.


Bio: I am a fungal biologist fascinated by the mechanisms that drive ecological dynamics and microbial interactions. I got "bit by the fungal bug" while working on a farm in Washington state, where I became obsessed with understanding the interactions between soil fungi and plants. From the farm, I moved to academia where I have studied the mutualistic fungal endophytes of invasive plants in undergrad, then the genetics of fungal communication in grad school, and now as a postdoc at UC Berkeley I'm chasing wildfires and using a combined metabolomic, genomic, and experimental approach to understand how fungi respond to fire.
