[Ucwsfiscal] AB 746: LAEP Eligibility changes to Underrepresented

Hello all,

Apologies for the delay. I was out on vacation. I checked in and it appears this bill was reduced down to only address the types of employers eligible for LAEP. Previously it was also addressing student prioritization and definition on underrepresented. Upon reading, the amended language recasts 'research centers' to public institutions that provide employment experiences related to the student's major or that provide opportunities for skill attainment for their area of study. Read: they are being more liberal in their allowance for positions on our campuses for example. The bill is currently with the Senate Education Committee and its new form will be hear on 6/21. We'll see what happens from there. It has a couple more layers to pass through before going to the Governor's desk.

Best,

Aprí

Hi Apri,

Can you provide an update on this bill? I see that there is some language currently crossout and there is voting inf labeled "pass".
Thank you,
BN

Good morning colleagues,
The following bill has been proposed and I wanted to get your thoughts on its impact. I know some of you have direct dealings with the eligibility side of LAEP, so I would appreciate your feedback on the implications (positive/negative) this bill would have as written. I'm working wiht our State Government team on this, so if you have feedback please provide no later than Tuesday, March 14. Thank you.

AB 746 (Sanchez) Learning-Aligned Employment Program: Eligibility<https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB746>

This bill would delete the requirement that a student be from an underrepresented background to be eligible to participate in the Learning-Aligned Employment program. The bill would instead require participating campuses to prioritize eligible students from underrepresented backgrounds, as defined by the commission, for learning-aligned employment positions. The bill also would delete the authorization for research centers and institutions and instead authorize public postsecondary institutions to employ participating students if their learning-aligned employment opportunities provide participating students with employment experience related to the student’s major or provide opportunities for skill attainment necessary for employment within their areas of study after graduation.
