There is no question that UC Merced values student success. While the campus has documented this priority—the UC Merced Mission, Principles of Community, Hallmarks of the Baccalaureate Degree, UC Merced Campus Visioning Process, and student and program learning outcomes—we have not yet defined what success means for our undergraduate and graduate students. The goal of such a definition is to facilitate a shared understanding of student success at UC Merced and how every community member contributes to that effort.
Using existing campus documents, sample definitions and research around institutional conditions supporting student success, a draft definition of student success was collaboratively developed and is being circulated for campus review. The draft Student Success Definition can be found at studentsuccess.ucmerced.edu/student-success-definition, along with additional information about how the draft was created.
Feedback from the campus is essential in the development of this definition, and you can provide feedback in two ways:
In person, by attending a Student Success Definition Brown Bag Lunch. These brown bag lunches will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about how the draft was developed, understand key components that were and were intentionally not included, participate in discussion, and offer valuable feedback.

We appreciate your time reflecting on this definition and for the contributions each of you makes to our students’ success!
