Dear Sustainability colleagues,
The Office of Sustainability and Faculty Advisory Committee on Sustainability are partnering on an effort to dramatically increase the number of certified green labs/offices on campus. Our goal is to certify 50 new ‘labs/offices’ across campus. We hope you will participate!
If you run a lab (broadly defined, e.g. could be a research chemistry, physics teaching, or media lab) – the process is to certify the lab.
If you do not run a lab – the process is to certify a group of faculty (e.g. a department or coherent subset thereof) via the parallel ‘green office’ program.
The process is straightforward (see below), quick (it took me less than an hour for a recertification), no cost to you, and there is help available (cc’d).
Steps to becoming a green lab/office.
1. Email Valerie Laquindanum <vlaquindanum at ucmerced.edu<mailto:vlaquindanum at ucmerced.edu>> the Green Labs coordinator.
2. Meet with Valerie for an orientation
3. Complete an online assessment
4. Have your lab members complete the online assessment (optional)
There is no requirement that individual labs/offices hit a particular sustainability target at the moment – our goal is simply increasing certifications. The certification then identifies ways in which you may be able to improve, making becoming more sustainable as simple as connecting the dots.

I’m happy to answer any questions, but encourage you to contact Valerie who knows the ropes better than me and can guide you through. Our goal is to get at least 50 new labs/offices having started the process by the end of Earth Month.
We encourage you to sign up soon! And please spread the word!
With best regards,
Mike
