The Center for Africana Studies
Call for Conference Travel Grants
The Center for Africana Studies at UC Merced invites applications for Conference Travel Grants for Students in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSHA), researching the experiences of Africans and African-descended people worldwide, past and present. Preference will be given to graduate students in SSHA. The Center is a research and cultural hub committed to advancing innovative and interdisciplinary research on Africa and the Diaspora. It supports events and activities for Black students and faculty to connect, seek mentorship, and lay the foundation for future leaders, activists, and scholars.
Travel Conference Grants of up to $500 are meant to offset costs associated with attending academic conferences relevant to the student's discipline/research area. These awards may be used for travel expenses, such as airfare, lodging, meals, ground transportation, and conference registration. Grants should be used by January 31, 2024. While grant recipients do not need to present at the conference, applicants must specify in their proposals how their attendance/participation at the conference would 1) enhance their research and scholarship and 2) broaden their professional networks.
A submission consists of a single PDF file with:
1. A paragraph description of the applicant's research project.
2. A paragraph about the proposed conference that answers the above-mentioned questions
3. A one-page budget outlining how the funds will be spent.
4. A one-page C.V.
Applications are due by October 15th at 11:59 pm. Email any questions and application materials to msaeteurn3 at ucmerced.edu<mailto:msaeteurn3 at ucmerced.edu>.
