Dear SSHA faculty and graduate students,
Attached and appended below: These are start of the semester reminders and resources, related to instructional policies and student support, with special reminders about COVID 19 resources.
Do you have topics or questions you would like to see highlighted in future SSHA outreach? Ideas are welcomed! Outreach is during key times in the semester, generally on a monthly basis.
Basic Needs
While teaching and mentoring students, we may be the first point of contact about basic needs questions. These are some important resources to share and highlight:
With COVID 19, campus has a one-stop site featuring student resources at https://success.ucmerced.edu/
The Technology Resources Program (https://ue.ucmerced.edu/technology-resources) is available to students who need loaner technology to complete coursework this Spring.
For emergency funding and housing, information and appointment button is available for students at https://studentaffairs.ucmerced.edu/dean-students/emergency-funds
Campus Communications
All UCM students are now part of an “Academic Success Resources” CatCourse, with weekly announcements focused on campus resources, success tips, and just-in time support. If you would like to be added to the site, contact Miriam Chavez (mchavez63 at ucmerced.edu<mailto:mchavez63 at ucmerced.edu>) To receive campus level information about support and resources for undergraduates, all instructors may join the Student Success Listserv (https://studentsuccess.ucmerced.edu/listserv).
Inclusive Principles, in a Remote Context
To start the semester, noting context and some principles for working together can help build rapport and community. An example includes: “Many of us are trying to balance caring for children/loved ones with work/school responsibilities, so please be flexible and supportive of each other.” This kind of reminder can be tailored and noted periodically to assure students that we are in this together.
Instructional Video Recordings in Classroom Spaces
For recording activities, classrooms are reserved for courses that require technology or laboratory space that is only available on-campus. To initiate the reservation process, please complete and submit a reservation form<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001x74VSUoLAXDJJZhf_5SYkbdGHmBtneY1s_BJB4cTHRmCZhwxRAgL5QEGahHhmuRyM9YPrcx7sp0t_NSX21-BZLKsddtMNXVf6XmoWecjI033G1l3qhqMpn-xSsLp7-wX7JcmA2C2k5bzR1_doElPdrF5hMkDLOTTQ_gpAaXyFQTDdY7GeuNW-1O5OGqE9Vr85iFzIf1fuuMkb_RfkwTJ109KrXgA-6wOr3MAbKkcync=&c=3xS5g8Rg0uzllmY0_kzpG8YzZHJUO5sRRyjUhpk-v9tnaht5XhYH6Q==&ch=rCaD1F-C4mOsQ-QARu08jUGeybClKs-cCBUOWOzzoDcYnCraSpnMRA==> at least three working days in advance of use. This request process has full support from the Office of Information Technology, with associated COVID 19 safety protocols.
Support by Academic Advisors
As a key reminder: Academic advisors play a key role in supporting students’ academic progress, with guidance on policies, petitions, and campus resources at https://ssha-advising.ucmerced.edu/meet-your-advisor/advisor-appointments Bobcat Advising is an advising resource for undeclared majors and first year students at: https://bobcat-advising-center.ucmerced.edu/ Do feel encouraged to remind students that academic advisors are here to provide support and guidance.
