Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder to come to tomorrow's lab meeting having looked at the
attached manuscript. We will talk about its strengths and weaknesses and
also chat about the review process in general, including tips for how to
write a journal paper review.
Again, please keep this manuscript confidential.
See you tomorrow at 12:30 pm, and here is our lab meeting schedule with

Hi Everyone,
We will be reviewing the attached manuscript as a group next Wednesday
during lab meeting. Please keep this manuscript confidential, and do not
distribute it, and if you notice a conflict of interest with one of the
authors notify me immediately. Come ready to discuss the merits and any
perceived problems with this manuscript. It has been submitted for review
to Annals of Botany. Below are guidelines from a different journal, but are
helpful for you to consider:
"Reviewers are kindly requested to assess whether the science is of
sufficient quality for publication. The following broad guidelines may be
helpful:
*Please identify scientific problems with the paper and how the author
could address them.
*Please identify passages in the paper that require redrafting because the
scientific message is lost or incorrect.
*On the other hand, if the English requires extensive attention please
mention this in your review but do not spend time correcting it. The
authors can be asked to seek advice, and in severe cases the journal can
access language-editing services.
*Please pay particular attention to figures, tables and their legends where
errors and poor presentation often occur.
*You are not asked to check the references - the production staff will do
this automatically. "
This paper may be a re-submission to the Annals of Botany, although this is
not mentioned, because the file includes a copy that has been marked up and
revised from a prior version. You only need to pay attention to the first
version; i.e., the first half of the file.
See you next Wednesday in BSP 404 at 12:30 PM!
Best,
Jay
