Hi Folx,
A fire started nearby to our house last night and I'm going to be staying close to home today, just in case. There's no immediate danger, we're just monitoring the situation.
Let's hold lab meeting remotely today:

Hi Folx!
Let's start lab meetings next week. I'll start, and let's kick off the semester with a discussion of the attached professional advice document I've been tinkering with the past few years. My students have seen several iterations, but here's the latest, complete version. Have a read and bring any questions or thoughts for discussion, and I'd just generally love to get any feedback you have on it. Should be a good tool to start us off on a new academic year.
Also, please sign up to facilitate lab meetings:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F7O_c9Zj3LtOM9tONLyQNloh5XBfyYPX0Su3eu9DoaI/edit?usp=sharing
I have started the schedule by suggesting the first dates for my grad. students, but this is all a suggestion. If you sign up for a date, you will be leading the discussion, either presenting some of your work for feedback, leading an exercise or mini-workshop of your choosing, or leading a discussion of a paper or article you find interesting. Or any other ideas!
I invite all students whose committees I'm a member on, and anyone else who is interested. If you'd like to be taken off this listserve for the semester please let me know. If I'm a member on your committee, there's no pressure to attend my lab meetings, just bop in and out as you like, and do feel encouraged to use us as a group to get feedback from, so please sign up to facilitate! (We strive to have a very friendly, safe atmosphere for feedback.)
Hope you're having a good start to the AY!
Best,
Jay
