Dear Campus Community,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Rita Guel.
Rita passed away on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Our beloved friend and coworker passed away as the result of a lengthy
medical illness. Rita has been a valued member of the School of Natural
Sciences family and an integral part of the SNS graduate staff since 2012.
She began working in the School of Natural Sciences as the Graduate
Programs Assistant, where she worked tirelessly, helping graduate students
and faculty navigate university life. Rita had an incredible passion for
assisting others.

Her dedication to UC Merced and expert knowledge of our graduate students
are just a few reasons for our university's success. On a personal level,
we will always remember Rita's infectious laugh, her love for music, her
love of all things related to pop culture and the fantastic stories she
would bring to staff meetings.

Rita was unique, a ray of hope for those who needed help, a force of
perseverance, a person who others could always count on; colleagues and
students highly respected her. She impacted the lives of so many people in
many ways. Her love and energy will continue with us all. Our thoughts go
out to her husband and children, as well as her friends and loved ones,
during this sad time.

to assist Rita's family with funeral expenses. Please consider donating, as
any amount will truly help her family during this difficult time.

As we begin the healing process from losing our colleague, we have
scheduled virtual group and individual counseling sessions for staff
members in need of support. The sessions will be provided by Jim Backlund,
LCSW and clinical director at Insight EAP. Group and individual sessions
schedule is listed below.

Friday, November 20:
