Hello Everyone, please join us *today* for this week's Enviro-Lunch talk by
Srabani Das, at 11 am to noon in room *SE2-302*.
*We were unable to reserve the same room every time, so please pay
attention for the room number. It changes every week. Sorry for the
inconvenience!*
*A snapshot of soil health and soil carbon dynamics in Northeast*
My research investigates the impact of converting wetness-prone marginal
lands to perennial bioenergy grass cropping systems. The focus is on the
influence of soil moisture, land use change and plant photosynthetic
pathway (C3 vs. C4) on soil organic carbon dynamics and soil health
characteristics of bulk soils (surface and to a depth of 120cm). I probed
the influence of moisture on C mineralizability through a laboratory
incubation study, exploring mechanistic mineralization models and
mineral-organic matter associations. I also investigated nitrous oxide
emission in perennial grasses using static chamber and gas chromatographic
techniques (non-dissertation research). My current research assesses soil
carbon and soil health status of corn-soybean agro-ecosystems of Maryland.
*Bio: *I am a researcher-teacher in the field of agro-ecology and soil
biogeochemistry. I completed my PhD in Biological and Environmental
Engineering (Soil Science concentration) from Cornell University and is
presently working as postdoctoral research associate at the University of
Maryland, College Park. I have taught environmental studies and policy at
different institutions of upstate New York at the undergraduate level and
have also served as the Head Teaching Assistant at Cornell University,
teaching auto-tutorial undergraduate biology. Besides my academic career, I
have engaged substantially in multi stakeholder processes focused on
improving environmental and agricultural policy in India and in upstate New
York. My family is based in Fremont, CA.
When: Thursday 09/05, 11am – noon
Where: SE2-302
Coffee will be provided, please bring your own mugs.
We look forward to seeing you,
Yang, Jennifer and Jing
