Dear Colleagues,
A few months ago SNS was offered the opportunity to “do something” in the
new dorms. The Unit Chairs recommended faculty from their groups, who came
together with key staff members to develop four Living Learning Communities
(LLCs). LLCs are groups of students with common interest in broad topics
who live together and participate in activities that are specific to their
interests. Research shows that LLCs increase persistence, decrease time to
graduation, and result in more positive student experiences overall.
The LLC Advisory Committee includes Rebecca Ryals, Francois Blanchette,
Mayya Tokman, Ryan Baxter, Erik Menke, Aaron Hernday, Hrant Hratchian
Dustin Kleckner, Rudy Ortiz, Gordon Bennett, Chelsea Arnold, Mike Dawson,
Peggy ODay, José Martínez, Angie Salinas. I also participate at some
junctures.
Four LLCs will be launched in the new dorms in August: Carson House:
Sustainable Futures; Vaughan House: The Digital Abacus; Aristotle House:
Leadership, Education, Service; and BEYOND the MD: Biomedical Sciences and
Health Professions. Full descriptions are available here:
https://housing.ucmerced.edu/natural-sciences.
Each LLC will have a graduate student who serves as a House Fellow. The
Fellow’s fundamental responsibilities are to build a safe and inclusive
learning community, to coordinate educational programmatic initiatives and
campus partnerships, and work with the LLC Advisory Committee to develop
programming relevant to their residential community. Fellows will be paid
the equivalent of a TA salary and be provided with an apartment at no or
low cost and a meal voucher for campus dining. We will also be working with
CETL to provide guidance as they develop their mentoring and teaching
skills. Like TA positions, being a House Fellow will require a maximum of
20 hours/week, which we will monitor closely.
We will invite graduate students to apply for the House Fellow positions
very soon and applications will be due June 4th. Part of the application is
a Letter of support from their advisors to ensure that you are aware of
their interest. The LLC Advisory Committee and I feel that the experience
of being a House Fellow will benefit graduate students in many ways and is
a particularly good opportunity for them to gain leadership, mentoring, and
teaching skills. Your letter of support need not be long but we hope that
you will be supportive of their applications.
Full job descriptions can be found on the AP Recruit website. Please share
with your students.
