Subject: Lab Tours-8th grade campus visits
Hello Fellow QSB Grads and Faculty,

I have been recently contacted by the program director of Upward Bound,
Mike Rea, who works for the Center for Educational Partnerships at our UCM
location in Fresno. He works with youth (Jr High-High school) in mentoring
them and helping the succeed in pre college performance and ultimately in
higher education. Mike has reached out to me because there will be larger
groups (90-120) 8th grade students coming for a campus visit on various
days (March 29, March 30 April 6 and April 27) and he doesn't wants this
‘campus tour’ to be the typical campus tour that they will probably get
when they are in high school. He wants the students to experience the
campus in a more interactive and intriguing way. I would love to get these
students a tour of my lab, but because of the larger numbers, I am finding
it challenging to this alone.

I am looking for any grad students (with permission of their PI of course!)
who would be wiling to volunteer ~ 30-45 minutes of their time ( most
likely around 10:30AM) on any one of these days (Week of Spring break
-March 29, March 30 and April 6, April 27) to give a brief 20-25 minute
tour of their lab/facility to a group of ~10-15 students. If I can get
enough volunteers, each student will have the opportunity to visit a real
research lab and potentially peek their interest in science!

Thanks guys for your time, I know how busy everyone is with the ‘never
ending’ research, teaching, coursework. I appreciate you reading this email
in it’s entirety.
If this is something you, and your lab, would be interested in helping me
out with please email me directly (pmira at ucmerced.edu) with the days you
are interested in helping out and we can coordinate further.

Thanks again!
