Hi all,

FYI: Next Thursday I'll be hosting a visit from Dr. Fred Barrett from Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine, who will talking about his research on
psychedelic drugs and the music listening experience. Fred is a very smart
guy and an engaging speaker. Please attend if interested.

* “Are You Experienced? Music and the Psychedelic Experience”*

*Time and Location: *Thursday, April 20, 12:00-1:30 PM, SSM 317

*Abstract: *Classic psychedelic drugs (serotonin 2A receptor agonists) have
substantial effects on perception, cognition, and brain function. The music
listening experience in particular is profoundly affected during
psychedelic experience. Music has played a key role in the conduct of
psychedelic therapy and research for many decades, with the expectation
that supportive music may facilitate a meaningful experience. I will
discuss recent investigations of the ways that psychedelic drugs such as
psilocybin (the active component of magic mushrooms) and lysergic acid
diethylamide (LSD) may increase music-evoked positive mood, music-induced
imagery, and the neural response to the time-varying tonal structure of
music. I will also discuss a tentative model of the features of music that
may be optimally supportive of peak psychedelic experiences.

*Bio: *Dr. Frederick Barrett received his Bachelor of Music at Temple
University, and his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of
California, Davis. He did his postdoctoral training in the Behavioral
Pharmacology unit at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine before joining that
department as faculty. His research is focused on music cognition, emotion,
and psychedelic drugs.
