Dear QSB Faculty, Postdocs and Graduate Students —

Please join me for theater games at the Theater Delta interactive performance next Monday, October 17, 2:30-4:00 in COB2 130. And then, please join me afterwards at the reception. We can toast Dean Zatz for her many new initiatives to improve welfare and build research excellence at UC Merced. This is a very important initiative that all of us should seriously consider going to.

For all of us, this event is a merit under Professional Development on your CV or Bio-Bib.

But much more importantly, I have witnessed many different sorts of conflicts that can arise between faculty advisors and their student mentees over thirteen years as faculty, eight years on QSB Executive Council and three years as Chair of QSB. If you are in academic life long enough, you will experience conflict within a collaboration or potential collaboration.

The mentor-mentee relationship is a kind of collaboration — a trust relationship. So really, any opportunity that we have to build our collaboration skills and managing collaborative relationships is time, especially in this one domain of the mentor-mentee relationship, that is so critical to our success, is very well spent.

I hope you can make it!

With thanks —

Sincerely,
Dave
