Hi all,
(Apologies in advance for the long email)
There are several positions for which we would like student representation
in QSB. Please send me an email by Sunday, Nov 29th expressing your
interest in any of the positions. I will then arrange a vote as a way to
provide feedback on the position. The Group chair has final say over all
representatives.*
If you are interested in one or more of these positions, please send an
email to Jessica with the following information. If you’re interested in
several committees, please copy and paste the last two lines, so that your
interest in each committee is noted separately.

Committee of interest:
Why are you interested in serving on the Committee?
*Executive Committee Student Representative.* One student rep is
needed. The role of the EC is to, in consultation with the faculty,
determine and implement policy for the good of the Group, establish and
guide the educational requirements of the Group, and represent the
interests of the Group to University and other agencies. Generally, there
are meetings about once per month, and the student rep becomes the point
person for general organization of grad student interests in QSB. Contact
your former rep Lauren Edwards for more details on workload and duties.
Dave Ardell is the chair of this committee, but we will be transitioning to
a new, TBD chair in the spring.
*Educational Policy Committee*. One student rep is needed. This committee
will periodically conduct reviews of the Groups, including the five-year
review. The EPC in consultation with the group faculty will determine
changes in requirements of the QSB Graduate Group.
*Recruitment Committee.* One student rep is needed. (Other student reps
include Sarah Parkhurst, Carissa Dunn, and Joannee Zumkehr. If one of you
would like to step down from this committee, please let me know). This
committee is charged with the development of recruiting materials for the
Group, promotion and representation of the Group to prospective students,
and identification and coordination of recruitment partnerships between QSB
and other institutions. Clarissa Nobile is the faculty chair.
*Admissions Committee.* Two - three student reps needed. Kirk Jensen is
the faculty chair. The duties of the student reps on this committee are as
follows:
1) Serve as point of contact for candidates during GVW weekend (answer
questions, guide them to their apts. etc.)
2) Go to Yosemite/dinner functions/ etc.
3) Interview different candidates and write up were made and given back to
the AC.
4) Give the faculty members of the AC feedback on the candidates (often
students see things better than us PIs!)
Practically speaking the time commitment include:
1) The entire GVW - 2 days Friday + Saturday
2) One meeting with me to go over what’s going on with GVW, this will occur
prior to GVW
3) Whatever effort it takes to document their interactions with the
candidates and send them on to the AC
*QSB Seminar Planning Committee*. One student rep is needed. The position
will commence in January 2017. The main responsibilities are to 1)
coordinate the graduate student sponsored speaker nomination, voting and
hosting each semester, and 2) participate in the planning and organization
of the seminar series for the 2017-2018 academic year.
*FYI, here is the relevant section of the Bylaws about student
representation and voting process:
A graduate student representative will be included as a non-voting member
on the Executive Committee, Educational Policy Committee, the Recruitment
Committee, and the Admissions Committee. The Group chair will choose the
student representative from the QSB Graduate Group after soliciting all
active graduate students by email in the Group for their interest. Students
will serve a one-year term and can be reselected for a second term.
The Chair of any committee with student members must excuse the student
representatives from meetings during discussion about other students,
applicants, personnel actions or disciplinary issues relating to faculty,
during rankings of existing students for funding, for disciplinary issues
related to students, and other executive session discussions at the
discretion of a committee Chair.

Best,
Jessica
