Hello philosophers and friends of UCM Philosophy!

Our first event of the Fall semester is still a few weeks away, but I wanted to promote an event that the Philosophy department is co-hosting with Sociology and History-Critical Race and Ethnic Studies:

Tianna Paschel and Cristina Mora (UC Berkeley)
Normalizing Inequality; How Californians Make Sense of the Growing Divide
Wednesday, October 14, 10:30am-12pm
COB2 392 (Zoom option available*)

Over the last four decades, California has become more unequal as it has become more diverse. Public media now calls California the richest and poorest state in the union. But how have residents made sense of these new dynamics? Drawing on interviews and survey data collected across the state, Mora and Paschel argue that residents have come to see the growing divides around them as “normal,” accepting and even reproducing the very inequities they disdain.

* IME the Zoom connectivity in that room is unreliable, so I recommend coming in-person if you can.
