All,

in light of Paul's great talk yesterday, I am sharing yesterday's article in the Chronicle of Higher Education regarding a lawsuit by a UCLA faculty colleague who is suing the major publishing companies:

Hi scholars of STEM of one sort or another,

Reminder that today we’ll hear from Paul Smaldino (CIS) on the financial failures of the STEM publishing system. (Please read or skim the attached if possible.)

See you at 2pm (we’ll start right on time) in SSM 230.

Best,
Tyler

One last email — if you haven't already read the preprint attached to the last email, then please read the attached instead. Paul says this is the version that they plan to submit, soon.

Or, of course, just show up excited to eat sandwiches and debate the merits and demerits of the STEM publishing system.

Hi MetaSTEMmers,

And for our first meeting, we'll discuss the institutional and epistemic consequences of a particularly contentious aspect of the peer-review process: publication fees, including publication fees for Open Access

Paul Smaldino will discuss his new preprint on the topic. Please see attached. It's short, so I think our meeting will be most lively if we can read it beforehand (9 pages double spaced). Regardless, Paul will start by giving an overview of his argument, and then we can discuss.

See you in two weeks,
Tyler

Hi MetaSTEMMERS,

The least-worst time for our monthly MetaSTEM meetings this semester is the third Thursday of the month, from 2-3pm. We'll reserve the room until 3:30pm for spillover conversation.

Our first meeting will be Thursday September 19, speaker TBA. As usual, we will have good catering and I'll get your order the week before.

Looking forward to reconnecting over All Things STEM-y!

Best,
Tyler & Christian
