We haven’t held a webinar recently, but we have some new results to share from UCSD – I hope you can join!
Rajni Kant Bansal will give a presentation:
Title:
Impact of Storage Losses on Grid Capacity Expansion Modeling: A case study in the WECC and California region
Short Abstract:
Energy storage, whether short-term (SDES) or long-term (LDES), is crucial to decarbonizing the electricity grid. While current capacity planning tools establish a benchmark level for future deployment, they often use an ideal model that fails to account for losses, which can result in unintended target levels. In this work, we model the impact of storage losses, such as self-discharge loss and capacity degradation, in power systems planning. We use SWITCH WECC, a capacity expansion model with a geographical resolution of 50 representative load zones corresponding to the 11 states in the Western Interconnect region, for various zero-emissions scenarios. Our analysis shows that capacity expansion modeling that does not account for storage losses can overestimate the optimal energy capacity deployed by up to 70%.
