I don’t know if there is anything new here, but I think that FIg. 7 on page 20 does a great job of capturing at a high level the trades off that we are modeling.  Especially for the students who are joining and trying to wrap their heads around the trade offs we are discussing, I thought this article might be an interesting read…

But, a key thing to keep in mind is that the “U” curve may have a fairly wide area at the bottom of the “U”. In this area, the cost doesn’t change much, but the selected solutions change much more.  In this region (which is where we want our optimizations to be), a small variation in cost inputs could have a large effect on the selected assets.
