Hello!
After a long and winding road, and lots of support from mentors, friends,
and the broader ERG family (including you!), I submitted my dissertation in
August. I'm giving my exit talk this Wednesday, Oct 6 at 4pm PT via Zoom
(see info below) and I would love to "see" you there to share the
culmination of this work.
Thank you for your help along the PhD journey!
Best,
Julia

*THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES GROUP PRESENTS:*
*TITLE:*
Crossed wires: Cross-sectoral dynamics of planning climate-resilient
electricity systems
*SPEAKER:*
Julia Szinai
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
*DATE: *October 6, 2021
*TIME: *4:00-5:30 PM
*LOCATION: *Zoom
*MEETING LINK: *https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/96725267259
*MEETING ID: *967 2526 7259
*NOTE: *This interactive presentation will be streamed in the Reading Room
(3 Giannini) for students who would like to attend in-person.
*DESCRIPTION:*
As both a source of GHG emissions and a system vulnerable to climate
change, the electricity sector faces a dual challenge of decarbonizing
generation, while also adapting to changing resource availability and
demands. Further, interdependencies with other sectors may create
compounding vulnerabilities for the grid. In this talk, I present my
dissertation research on the cross-sectoral interactions between the
electricity and transportation systems, and between the electricity and
water systems in the context of climate change in the Western US, in which
I demonstrate the value of, and necessity for, modernizations to the
electricity system planning paradigm to increase climate resilience.
*BIOGRAPHY:*
Julia Szinai recently earned her PhD in Energy and Resources at UC
Berkeley. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley
National Lab, in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area, pursuing her
research interests in climate change mitigation and adaptation of coupled
electricity and water systems. Throughout her graduate studies she has
researched at the Pacific Institute and different areas of Berkeley Lab,
evaluating the energy footprint related to water and the role of energy
storage, demand response, and electric vehicles in grid decarbonization.
She holds a MS in Energy and Resources, a Master of Public Policy, and a BA
in economics and Spanish from UC Berkeley.
