The Public Health Laboratory Science Internship Program: an APHL-CDC Initiative<https://aphl.org/TPD/career-development/internships/program/overview> places college students in public health laboratories to gain valuable early-career experience.

Building a Robust Laboratory Workforce<https://aphl.org/TPD/career-development/internships/program/overview>

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)<https://aphl.org/our-publications/stories/lab-culture-news/blog-post/what-is-the-aphl-cdc-fellowship-program-and-why-should-you-consider-applying> and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partner to offer a variety of laboratory fellowship programs to train and prepare scientists for careers in public health laboratories, via the Career Pathways in Public Health Laboratory Science Program. The program is open to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled at an accredited institution and in pursuit of a relevant certificate, associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree. The primary goal of the program is to increase the public health laboratory workforce through hands-on programs for students, support for early-career and experienced professionals, and opportunities for networking and leadership development.

Fellowships support a wide spectrum of public health laboratory program areas. Each fellow will be trained in alignment with established public health laboratory core competencies and will work on unique program-specific projects and other initiatives at host laboratories.

Fellows will work on projects specific to a laboratory science focus area that will support public health, One Health and other initiatives. Below are examples of the different focus areas fellows could be matched with and placed into:

Interns work on projects that fall into one of the following scientific focus areas:

  *   Bioinformatics and Molecular Epidemiology
  *   Biorisk management (biosafety)
  *   Emergency Preparedness and Response
  *   Environmental health
  *   Infectious disease
  *   Informatics
  *   Food safety
  * Laboratory Operations and Support Services
  *   Newborn screening
  *   Quality management
  *   Radiochemistry

Placement

Interns assist their mentor and other laboratory professionals working on meaningful projects that help protect the health of our communities. Past examples have included detecting genetic disorders in newborn babies, monitoring drinking water for lead, tracking viruses carried by insects and testing soil for environmental toxins.

Internship Locations

Interns can be placed in APHL member laboratories across the United States, dependent on the location of available host sites and the intern's residence for the duration of the program. Internships must be completed in-person and there are no relocation funds available. There are placement options for the school year and for summer break.

Projects

Interns are placed at a host public health laboratory under the supervision of a mentor, usually for a span of 12–16 weeks. Internships are in-person, so host laboratory selection will depend on the applicant’s residence during the program.
