Exciting news! Applications are now open for the 2026 Irvine Summer Institute in Neuroscience<https://uci.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a8a08ef283f933ad1cab878ad&id=6472b2a832&e=cc1cfde045> at the University of California, Irvine Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory.
The Irvine Summer Institute in Neuroscience is a 10-week program that engages undergraduate students in neuroscience research and prepares them for PhD graduate programs and careers in science research. Undergraduate students seeking an immersive summer neuroscience research experience are encouraged to apply by January 16, 2026.

During the program, students are carefully matched with laboratories where they spend the majority of their time conducting research under the mentorship of faculty and doctoral students. The program's diverse range of research topics and methods ensures that all students, regardless of their undergraduate major or academic background, have the opportunity to thrive. In addition to mentored laboratory research, students participate in cohort-wide methods and professional development workshops. These workshops prepare students to apply to graduate school and equip them with the skills necessary for success in science research. The program culminates in a day-long scientific symposium in which each student presents a poster of their research findings.

Students receive a stipend of $700/week for 10 weeks. Additionally, travel to and from UCI, meals, and housing are all covered. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) mechanism and the University of California Office of the President's UC-HBCU Initiative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a neuroscience major to apply?
No, you do not need to be a neuroscience major to apply. Past participants have included biology, psychology, chemistry and even statistics majors.

I will be graduating in June 2026. Am I eligible to apply?
Students must have at least 1 year left of their undergraduate studies to apply. Unfortunately, students graduating in 2026 are not eligible to participate.

Is this program open to international students?
At this time, students must be US citizens or permanent residents to participate.

Are letters of recommendation required?
Yes, two letters of recommendation are requested in the application.
