INTERNSHIP

The OutVote Summer Research Internship is a paid, remote, 12-week program running from the week of July 14, 2025 until the week of September 29, 2025. Offering a $1000 stipend to successful applicants, the OSRI will equip young researchers (high schoolers, undergraduates, and post-grads) with the mentorship and support to conduct original research on LGBTQIA-related topics, with a focus on queer justice and/or civic engagement. The program offers peer mentorship from accomplished queer researchers, as well as direct connections with OutVote's wide network of LGBTQIA+ advocates and organizers.

OutVote's Summer Research Internship (OSRI) was created to give young researchers the opportunity to explore their LGBTQIA-related interests while in constant conversation with real-world practitioners of LGBTQIA+ advocacy. Interns will not only have the chance to conduct original research which they can then use for their high school, university, or post-graduate degree progress, but also get a sense of how research is done in the context of a national grassroots organization. Empowering young queer researchers in this way is central to the larger mission of OutVote to mobilize the young LGBTQIA+ community of the US.

CURRICULUM

The program's curriculum will be adapted to the needs and abilities of each intern. For those with less experience, interns will be taught the basics of each week's focus area with an opportunity to try it out themselves. For more experienced interns, the program will be more independent, with a focus on the nuances and techniques of LGBTQIA-centered research.

By the end of the program, all interns will produce a written and visual summary of their work, in the form of a literature review and research proposal (for those with less experience) or a research brief with preliminary results and conclusions (for those with more experience). Credited as first authors, interns will have their work formally published by OutVote and added to our growing body of research aimed at advancing queer progress. Finally, interns will present their findings to OutVote's Executive Board as the capstone to their internship.

Sample curriculum (for an intern with experience conducting original research):

• Week 1: Introductions

• Week 2: Establish research question (questions may span a range of disciplines, with a focus on real-world application):

-- History (e.g., What is the history of queer political action in Arizona?)
-- Political science (e.g., How can intersectional coalitions be used to combat anti-LGBTQIA+ policy?)

-- Data science (e.g., Does the number of out LGBTQIA+ elected officials correspond to a real improvement in LGBTQIA+ policy outcomes?)
-- Sociology / Psychology (e.g., Does a sense of isolation from the wider queer community correspond to higher voter hesitancy among LGBTQIA+ people?)
-- Human geography (How has anti-LGBTQIA+ policy impacted queer emigration from / demography in Texas?)

      -- And more!

• Weeks 3-4: Background research + literature review
• Week 5: Research design + methodology

• Weeks 6-9: Data collection + preliminary analysis

• Weeks 10-11: Data analysis + conclusions

• Week 12: Panel presentation
