and basic vocabulary on topics covered in the class. Students who may need additional background can discuss reading they can do before the semester begins, to enable getting more out of the class. The course will draw upon synthesis reports and primary literature,
focusing mainly on updates that have emerged in the past two years, to investigate opportunities and constraints for slowing the worsening climate crisis through technical, ecosystem, and social climate solutions. It will use a systems and multidisciplinary
approach.

Charting sustainable pathways for a growing global human population that now dominates all of Nature and is on a trajectory of increasing consumption is the defining challenge of the 21st

approach. We will draw upon synthesis reports and primary literature, focusing mainly on updates that have emerged in the past two years. In the initial class segment we will focus on framing the challenge and examining broader solutions put forth by global
consensus, from the IPCC and other others. For the second segment we will study technical solutions in a societal context, with emphasis on opportunities being advanced in California. In the final segment of the class we will focus on biodiversity-climate
links and ecosystem, or Nature-based, climate solutions.
