Environmental DNA (eDNA) is everywhere, shed by plants as leaves decay and pollen flies, by animals as skin slough or feces, and as microbial communities grow and die. Managers are beginning to measure eDNA as a barometer for habitat change or as an additional
tool to track invasive or rare species. To help develop bespoke eDNA sampling regimes, co-analyze data, and evaluate the use of eDNA monitoring for NPS, the CALeDNA program at the University of California now has a cooperative agreement to get to work. In
this webinar, we will first introduce the different flavors of CALeDNA research projects that inspire our pilot projects with NPS. For example, researchers found eDNA could map different functional watershed zones, could track biodiversity responses to macroalgal
blooms or invasive plant presence, could identify microbial associates of invasive crayfish for novel bioindicators, and could measure the effects of wildfire on lagoons. Then, we will highlight CALeDNA-NPS pilot research that focuses on tracking aquatic invasive
species and anadromous fish, harmful algal blooms, and riverine habitat surveys spanning the tree of life. These pilots have already helped establish a fledgling research coordination framework that we hope you will be interested in. This webinar will include
ample time for discussion about future CALeDNA – NPS projects and your ideas on where there is the most need to help equip people with eDNA as a biodiversity and ecological monitoring tool.<br>
