<div dir="ltr">Another cool way to help is to become involved in the Ron Finley Project. This project focuses on ending food deserts, improving nutrition, changing economic forces, making cities better for people, and reducing hunger and crime rates through urban gardening. It is centered in South Central LA where vacant lots (usually owned by the city of LA) and parkways get used for gardens so that people can grow their own food. Ron Finley is known as the gangsta gardener because there was a warrant issued for his arrest for planting gardens in unused public spaces. He fought the arrest and the press got hold of the story and then those laws were changed. He encourages gardening throughout the world as a solution to many of its problems. <div><br></div><div>Merced is a great place to grow food and many of our graduate students anonymously reported in a survey going hungry sometimes due to financial limitations. I have a garden and I am always happy to share what I grow, especially with students.<div><br></div><div><a href="http://ronfinley.com/the-ron-finley-project/">http://ronfinley.com/the-ron-finley-project/</a><br></div></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Tue, Jun 9, 2020 at 8:28 PM Miriam Barlow <<a href="mailto:miriam.barlow@gmail.com">miriam.barlow@gmail.com</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr"><div>Dear QSB members,</div><div>Tomorrow as part of the #ShutdownSTEM protests, we are encouraged to devise actions that we can take to promote equity for Black students and scientists. </div><div><br></div><div>A simple and immediate action we can take is to donate money to the United Negro College Fund.</div><div><a href="https://uncf.org/" target="_blank">https://uncf.org/</a><br></div><div><br></div><div>I am sure there are many other suggestions that people have and there is a definite need to examine the environment that we live in and create.
