I’ll be giving an intro to computational methods next fall semester, with a focus on biological systems. I think many QSB grad students could benefit from attending! The course has no pre-requisites, and will teach students how to use the
linux environment, bash, and python. The second part of the course focuses on curve fitting and computational modelling. Would you be able to send out a short email to the QSB grad group to let the students know about the course?

Programming is an essential skill for both academic and industry research. This course teaches the basic tools and principles of scientific computing, and
requires no prior knowledge in programming. The first part of the course will cover the Linux operating system, shell scripting, and scientific programming using python. Students will learn how to use these tools to parse, analyze, fit, and plot data.
The second part of the course will focus on optimization and numerical methods to fit and model experimental data. The course will involve interactive lecture/lab sessions in which new concepts will be learned and immediately applied. All software used in
the course is open-source so the tools taught will be freely available for students to use, but
students must have their own laptops to participate.

Classes are given twice weekly, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:00-10:15 AM.
