<div dir="ltr"><br><div class="gmail_quote">---------- Forwarded message ----------<br>From: <b class="gmail_sendername">Miriam Barlow</b> <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:miriam.barlow@gmail.com">miriam.barlow@gmail.com</a>></span><br>Date: Wed, Aug 23, 2017 at 3:44 PM<br>Subject: Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship Opportunity<br>To: "UCM QSB Faculty (<a href="mailto:qsb-faculty@lists.ucmerced.edu">qsb-faculty@lists.ucmerced.edu</a>)" <<a href="mailto:qsb-faculty@lists.ucmerced.edu">qsb-faculty@lists.ucmerced.edu</a>><br><br><br><div dir="ltr"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Dear QSB Faculty,</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">I am pleased to share that, based on the size of our program and number of students at or near finishing stage, QSB has been awarded two </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Graduate</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> Dean’s </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Dissertati<wbr>on</span><span style="font-size:12.8px">Fellowships to be disbursed in Spring 2018 or in “Late Spring” (Summer) 2018. The </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Graduate</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> Dean’s </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Dissertati<wbr>on</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Fellowship</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> (GDDF) program is intended for students in their final semester/term of </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">graduate</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> school, providing them time to focus solely on completion of the </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">dissertation</span><span style="font-size:12.8px">. This award should help enhance awardees’ qualifications as candidates for university faculty teaching and research appointments, for postdoctoral appointments, and for research positions outside the academy.</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">These fellowships are open to all QSB doctoral students who are advanced to candidacy at the time of completing their application, and who are one semester/term away from completion of their degree. All QSB doctoral </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">graduate</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> students are eligible for this award regardless of United States citizenship. Awardees must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and be enrolled in 12 units during Spring 2017. A student who has previously received funding for completing their </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">dissertation</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> work is ineligible to receive a GDDF. Preference will be given to applicants who have progressed according to QSB’s expected time-to-degree, which is 5.4 years. Award recipients are expected to file their </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">dissertation</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> by the end of the award period. Fellows who have not filed their dissertations by the end of the award period are NOT eligible for any further financial support from the </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">Graduate</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> Division or from QSB. Fellows are prohibited from being employed during the award period. The value of the </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">fellowship</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> is $2750/mo for 4 months plus tuition and fees but not campus based fees during the Spring, and $7763 as a lump sum during “Late Spring” for the summer term.</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">If you have a QSB doctoral student who meets these eligibility requirements and is prepared to defend in Spring or Summer, please nominate them by sending their CV and an optional brief narrative as a response to this email by midnight on Friday, September 8. Please also state the term of expected date of filing of the thesis (Spring or Summer). We will rank candidates according to academic performance, time in the program, and need, with a preference for Spring awardees (because of greater value of the </span><span class="m_-5587254688041051581gmail-il" style="font-size:12.8px">fellowship</span><span style="font-size:12.8px"> to both students and faculty during the busy academic term, and the greater benefit to the program in accelerating time to degree).</span><br style="font-size:12.8px"><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px">Thank you and kind regards,</span><span class="HOEnZb"><fo
