[PhilosophyEvents] Welcome to Fall 2023!

[Philosophy]

Dear Philosophers,

I am happy to welcome you to the first academic year of the new Philosophy Department at UC Merced. We have an exciting line up of events for you this fall (see the attached poster), starting with a Welcome Event on Friday, September 1st. Please join us for drinks and snacks in COB2 290 from 3 to 5 p.m. and chat with other faculty and students.

We will also be hosting weekly Reading Rooms. You are welcome to bring your own mug and a book to COB2 290 on available Friday afternoons to spend a couple of hours reading in a cozy chair with other philosophy students.

Minorities and Philosophy<https://www.mapucm.com/> is student run and has its own website and mailing list; we encourage you to sign up.

In addition to these events announcements, we have some news:

We warmly welcome visiting graduate student Dr. Henry Bowles<https://www.classics.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-henry-bowles> from Oxford University, who will be giving a talk on December 1st, and who is located in SSM 358A for the year. Stop by and say hello!

We are not far away from spring registration, so I have made a handy poster, attached, that provides an overview of the courses we plan to offer.

The faculty are currently exploring the option of a second major, in Science, Technology, and Values. If approved, it could be available as early as 2025. If you would like to know more come and talk to us at the Welcome Event or in office hours.

Finally, some of the philosophy faculty may be moving to the 3rd floor of COB 1 in the near future, including myself, so look out for changes in office hour locations. If my door is open, whether in SSM or COB, feel free to say hello!
