While cu rrent capacity planning tools establish a benchmark level for future deplo yment\, they often use an ideal model that fails to account for losses\, w hich can result in unintended target levels. In this work\, we model the i mpact of storage losses\, such as self-discharge loss and capacity degrada tion\, in power systems planning. We use SWITCH WECC\, a capacity expansio n model with a geographical resolution of 50 representative load zones cor responding to the 11 states in the Western Interconnect region\, for vario us zero-emissions scenarios. Our analysis shows that capacity expansion mo deling that does not account for storage losses can overestimate the optim al energy capacity deployed by up to 70%.\nSpeaker Bio:\nRajni Kant Bansal works as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Energy Research at t he University of California San Diego. He has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engine ering\, and an M.S.E in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Johns Hopk ins University. During his studies at JHU\, he also worked alongside the G rid Operations and Planning team at the Electric Power Research Institute.
