DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Here is an update on the talk we will have from
Alan Lamont next week (Sept 24). Please see the abstract below – it shou
ld be quite interesting! It is well aligned with the discussion we’ve b
 een having of cross-sector storage.\nAbstract\nStructuring a Zero Carbon E
nergy System with Synthetic Fuels\nAlan Lamont\nIf we are to entirely deca
rbonize the energy system\, we will need to produce carbon free electricit
y and carbon free fuels. Some amount of fuel will be needed within the in
dustrial and transportation sectors. Fuels can also provide energy storag
e\, particularly long-term storage\, to take advantage of seasonal variati
ons in energy and to back up the electric generation system. The fuels may
include hydrogen\, ammonia\, methanol\, and other hydrocarbons. Fuels wi
ll be produced from electrical energy and perhaps heat. To produce fuels
electric generation above the direct electric load can be captured and use
d for fuel production. This implies that the electricity system will be c
onsiderably larger than today. In developing this system\, key design dec
isions will include the mix of electric generating technologies\, the capa
cities of generators\, and the capacity of the fuel production technology.
Regardless of the electric generation technologies chosen\, the excess e
nergy for fuel production will be quite variable. The total energy captur
ed depends on the variability of the electric generation and the capacity
that is installed to produce fuel. A large fuel production capacity can c
apture the peaks in electricity production. However\, as fuel production
capacity is increased\, the marginal energy captured declines\, so the ove
rall capacity utilization of production capacity falls off\, increasing th
e total system cost without providing much additional fuel.\nThis research
explores the issues in designing an electric generation and fuel producti
on system. It first develops an analytic framework to determine the energ
y available for fuel production as a function of the electric generation m
ix and the fuel production capacity. It then explores the cost tradeoff o
f different system designs. The discussion identifies possible technologi
es that might make the system more cost effective. Finally\, the study id
entifies several questions that need additional study.\n\n\n
