TWM:  Health Education and Pre-Health Opportunities in the Central Valley
Are you from the Central Valley, pre-health, and/or want to learn more about the different health education programs and internships available in the area?

We invite you to part two of our three part Together We Lead (TWL) focusing on Health Education and Pre-Health Opportunities in the Central Valley. This first event will feature Julie Kraiser, UCSF Fresno San Joaquin Valley PRIME+ Education Lead, Dr. Qumsiyeh Director of UCSF Fresno's Pre-medical Surgical Internship, and Brooke Crosswhite Osteopathic Medicine Student from CHSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Speakers will discuss the various programs for pre-health students within the UCSF Fresno programs and share a bit about the brand new College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Valley! We also hope to highlight academic programs such as US Davis’s School of medicine (MD), various nursing, NP, PA, DPT, D-OT, Pharm D, and MPH programs in the Valley.

This event will run from 6:00pm-7:30pm with roughly 10-20 minutes at the end for questions.

Description of Speaker:

Julie K:
Julie Kaiser is a Ph.D. Candidate in Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She is originally from Chicago, Illinois, but currently resides in Fresno with her partner and their menagerie of pets. Her current position is as Education Lead for the SJV PRIME+ Program at UCSF Fresno and UC Merced, where she assists in the creation, delivery, and assessment of medical and pre-med education. She is passionate about social equity initiatives and endeavors to make higher education possible for students of all backgrounds. In her free time, she likes to travel, bake, and make all kinds of art.

Dr. Q:
Dr. Qumsiyeh is a general surgery resident with strong interests in mentorship and education. Dr. Qumsiyeh’s interest in medicine was heavily influenced by his participation in a pre-medical surgical program at his undergraduate university. Working as a resident physician in California’s Central Valley, he realizes shortages in physicians as well as the need to diversify the medical community to reflect the diversity of the patient population. Dr. Qumsiyeh, with the rest of the IRC, took on the challenge and crafted the UCSF Fresno Pre-Medical Surgical Internship to encourage and provide mentorship to pre-medical students from the Valley to pursue careers in medicine.

Brooke Crosswhite:
Brooke was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. After high school, she pursued a B.S. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UCLA. Along her journey to medical school, she developed a special interest in street medicine while working with the Mobile Clinic Project. She also worked as an EMT for UCLA EMS and spent her gap year on Skid Row as a case manager and harm reduction specialist. Because of these experiences, she resonated with the principles of osteopathic philosophy and chose to pursue DO school. As an OMS-II, at California Health Sciences University COM in Clovis, CA near Fresno, she aspires to work in partnership with patients to facilitate healing through osteopathic manipulative medicine. Her hobbies include gardening, film photography, and playing soccer with my friends!
