Are you thinking about volunteering at Mercy Medical Center or another community clinic next year?  Are you interested in learning more about health care?

 

Public Health is offering a brand new course directly related to health care in the San Joaquin Valley.  I would strongly encourage any pre-health student who intends to volunteer at Mercy Medical or any other local clinic to enroll in this course. This course will be taught by Dr. Derry Ridgway,  UC Merced Medical Education Director.  Enrollment is with my consent and first priority will be given to students with at least a 2.7 GPA.

Course Description:

PH 195 - Health Care in the San Joaquin Valley,  Instructor: Derry Ridgeway, Day & Time: Thursday 7:30-9:20 pm

The class will include presentations and discussions of three types.  (1) Expert researchers and clinicians will present topics of importance to the health of San Joaquin Valley residents.  Examples: metabolic syndrome among Latin youth, valley fever, tuberculosis, accommodating diverse healing traditions within conventional Western allopathic care.  (2) Practitioners from various health care professions will discuss their career specialty, including the contribution to overall health care, required training and credentialing, work requirements.  Examples: respiratory therapist, generalist and specialist physicians, physical therapist, dietician.  (3) Representatives from SJV health care facilities will describe the standards expected knowledge for pre-professionals and non-professionals serving as volunteers or interns.  Examples: HIPAA confidentiality rules, workplace safety, professional boundaries.
