Dr. Chao will discuss recent trends in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States, focusing on racial/ethnic differences in use. She will also discuss CAM and chronic pain to highlight the potential role of CAM in efforts to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in health.

Maria T. Chao, DrPH, MPA is completing a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. She received her masters in public policy and her doctorate in public health at Columbia University, New York. Her prior research focused on socio-medical factors of health behaviors particularly on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in minority populations. Her current focus is on developing public health interventions that utilize CAM to improve quality of life for underserved populations living with chronic conditions.
