Soil organic carbon (SOC) is one of the largest carbon (C) reservoir on the earth surface, containing about twice the amount of C in the atmosphere. Understanding SOC residence time is crucial for accurately modeling global C dynamics.
Widely occurring iron (Fe) oxide minerals can strongly bind with SOC and play in important role in C stability. Under aerobic condition, Fe-SOC association can potentially provide physicochemical protection to SOC and inhibit its degradation. However, transient
or permanent anaerobic condition in soils promotes Fe redox reactions, which may compromise the stability of Fe-bound SOC. Therefore, understanding the fate of Fe-bound SOC during anaerobic/aerobic incubation and redox reactions of Fe is important for predicting
SOC residence time in soil.

We investigated the fate and transformation of mineral-associated SOC during Fe reduction (anaerobic) and during aerobic incubation. Our results highlight that the C/Fe ratio and mineral type played an important role with broad implications
on the stability of SOC. Findings from our study will be valuable in the development of the process-based model for C cycles and prediction of its response to climate change.

Bio: I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory working under Jennifer Pett-Ridge. At LLNL, my work focuses on understanding how microbe-mineral interactions regulate cellular-C persistence in soil. I am currently working
on an experiment using microbial isolates with defined traits in combination with defined minerals, to determine the impact of microbial traits and mineralogy on the composition and stability of mineral-associated OC. My graduate research was mainly focused
on understanding the fate of Fe-mineral associated SOC during anaerobic Fe reduction and aerobic incubation. My email is
